GEMS Survey Ltd completes Arctic Survey using MV Neptune

Neptune ehf with GEMS Survey Limited have successfully completed a two month arctic campaign of geophysical, and hydrographic site surveys with additional meteorological and oceanographic data acquisition in Baffin Bay, offshore Greenland.

The MV Neptune was supplied along with several key survey team members in a joint operation conducted on behalf of Consortium of Major Operators in the extreme northern waters to latitudes approaching 76°N.

Once again, the MV Neptune performed extremely well in this demanding environment with the added potential hazards associated with extremely large icebergs ever present.

Prior to sailing, a Reson 8160 deep-water multibeam echosounder was installed - as part of our commitment to continual development - to complement the existing hull mounted shallow water multibeam echosounder.  The MV Neptune now has a permanently mobilised survey spread with up to 3000m depth survey capability.

A 2D high resolution seismic system along with sidescan sonar and a shallow geological profiling system was mobilised to obtain data in up to 1000m water depth and up to 2km below the seafloor.

A number of meteorological and oceanographic stations were established offshore and are intended to remain in place for up to a year, continuously collecting data from this relatively unfamiliar and unexplored environment.

The MV Neptune is currently underway, returning to her home port of Akureyri, Iceland, following the successful conclusion of this survey campaign where she shall be mobilised in advance of her next charter.
